Why I went with Typepad for 8.99 a month. Well, that and because work blocked blogger.
Nice post, December. Jay Lake has a great writing career article up on the Broadsheet. It's more short-fiction oriented (and speculative fiction too, I suppose), but some good stuff. I particularly like his idea of 'writing to the edge', which as an approach can be applied to any art.
