Friday notes

So I have a real New year's book to blog about (Hell'e Belles by Jackie Kessler) but I wanted to mention this one, because I'm rereading it, and every time I read it I love it more.

I'm a huge fan of Sharon Kay Penman anyway, but the mysteries--of which The Queen's Man is the first--are seriously almost an obsession. And in true December fashion, it's because the hero, Justin de Quincy, is just...he's just so hot. I can't even explain why he's so, so sexy. He's not like a super alpha or a strong, silent type, he's not a reckless bad boy, he's just...so hot.

In fact, he is so hot he inspired what I believe is the only gushy fangirl email I ever sent, which I admittedly thought was going to, like, Sharon Kay Penman's PA or something but in fact was sent right to her. In which I said something about how Justin was my favorite hero ever and I am so in love with him I want to cry, or something equally dorky, thinking a fellow fan would see it. And of course I got an email back from Ms. Penman herself, which I was too embarrassed to reply to. (In my defense it was just a "Thanks so much, I'm glad you like him I do too!" kind of thing.)

Anyway. Seriously. This is a great mystery. It has some very creepy moments and quite a few incredibly sexy moments, at least if you're like me and you fell in love with Justin almost immediately. So go read it. Buy it here.

Second thing: I blogged over at Deliciously Naughty about sexy songs. I put my two must-listen-when-writing-sex songs on there, with videos (sort of) so go check them out and give them a listen, because I'd love to hear what you think.

Shoot, I know there was another snippety thing I wanted to post. I may update later.

THAT is one gorgeous cover!!

I'm sure ms Penman appreciated the letter...I don't think you could ever get enough fanmail! (not that I'm exactly swamped...having received a sum total of...zero...oh...except for an email from one of my sisters saying she loved my book - but that doesn't count)

SO, you say you want to HIRE rabid fangirls, but maybe you want to HIRE OUT as one, instead?

Yeah but Rebecca, you got an awesome review from Mrs. Giggles, that's a huge fan letter in itself! Just wait, it will happen!

Lol littlebird. Yep, maybe that's what I should do. I will work on the t-shirt design for that one: Fangirl for hire.

Thanks Seeley!

I'm not much into mysteries, but if Justin is comparable to Matt Farrell from JM's Paradise or Cal from JC's Bet Me. I'll give this book a try. I love hot guys :P

Eep, I haven't read either. Justin is sort of...he's good, if that makes any sense. He's clever and strong. He has a sad past (he's the bastard child of a Bishop, who was raised not knowing who his father was and being told his mother was a whore. There's a little more to it than that, but in a nutshell.) He's attractive to women and genuinely likes them, but he's a guy's guy too. Like I said, it's hard to describe just what makes him so appealing. I know another SKP fan who isn't a huge fan of the mysteries and doesn't react to Justin like I do--she just finds him likeable but not squirm-in-your-seat hot--but then I know there are others out there who do feel like me. So give them a try, and see what you think!

Oh, actually. I do believe part of the reason Justin do does it for me is I read the second book in the series, Cruel as the Grave, first. In which Justin has passionate, vengeful sex. It's not graphic, but it's a lovely paragraph and really set him up in my eyes as some kind of man. :-)

With a review like that, I definitely have to check out Sharon Kay Penman!

In late 1971, or early 1972, there was a song with a French couple singing to each other during the act of love, and ended with her calling out ‘Now Max, now’. It played only a couple of weeks and then was censored off the stations. I still remember to this day what I was doing when I first heard it. Our ship, the Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger was in dry-dock at San Francisco’s Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard. My buddy and I shared an apartment off base on Bryant Street in SF. We were driving to the base in the morning when we first heard it on the radio of my 1964 Olds F85. I think the name of the song was the ‘Sounds of Love’, but I’m not sure. I nearly wrecked the car. That is the hottest song I have ever heard. :)

Erica, you absolutely must, yes! She does fantastic straight historicals as well, her research is amazing. Those are definitely worth a read but man...the endings (except for the first one) are depressing, I warn you. Her first trilogy was about medieval Wales and after I finished the last one I was depressed for weeks.

The mysteries aren't depressing, though. I love SKP and yes, go read something by her!!

You should Google it, Bernard, and see if you can get hold of an mp3 or something. Relive the magic. :-)

Bernard, is this it?

BernardL said...

No, D, but thanks for looking. I am going to hunt for it. The one I'm thinking about was a very high end recording with the couple singing to each other in French with very credible vocals.

Oh, you have to read Bet Me and Paradise :D Matt is the best hero ever, and Cal is, well, the second best hero ever? LOL

And Luke is third, so you can trust me *wink*

Stacia said...

I'm putting those both on my list. If they're better than Luke, I have to give them a try! Thanks!

Bernard, let me know if you do find it!

I found it and the 1972 was the clue. It was done by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. It was titled 'Je T'aime Moi Non Plus'. I listened to it on imeem for the first time in thirty-five years, and... it's... just as hot as I remember it. :) Here's the link:

Awesome, thanks! I'm so glad you found it too!
