I never do this, and I hope I'm not jinxing myself...

But since I did a longer post yesterday than I planned (stupid woman!!! I saw her car this morning--she'd back in to her spot. HA!), and I'm reaching a pivotal scene in Unholy Ghosts so really want to get back to it, so...

I'm going to post a snippet.

I'll probably remove it after a day or two, but here it is. Keep in mind this is a first draft, please! :-)

****Sorry...you missed it.****

Oh, and...Tionna has done it again.

As if the metrics weren't enough to hook me, you have to do snippets.

You are such a tease.

Thanks, Kerry! Yes, I am indeed. Lol.

Geesus, this is GOOD, December!

Very good, D; but Edsel? :)

Dear Ms. Quinn/Kane

In the interests of the continued solvency of Bettie's Book Budget, we humbly request that you add some sort of warning regarding the addictive content of your snippets. With Christmas so close, Bettie should not even consider buying more books for herself. She has nieces and nephews and bookish older relatives to buy for. She cannot afford to start pre-ordering on Amazon like a mad, book-crazed fiend.

So, please, before you post, think of the children.

Sincerely,
Bettie's Book Budget

Dude, WTF?? How great are you??

I love the tone, the names, (the names!) the strange eerie feeling I got in the pit of my stomach.

When?? I must know when!

Ohh, very intriguing. Who's Edsel (funny name, I agree with Bernard) and what does Chess need the hand for? And will Terrible get to pay for being mean? :)

Stacia said...

Thanks Bernita!

Lol Bernard, almost everybody has odd names in this one. I just thought Edsel had a cool feel.

Oh, Bettie, you are awesome, and you too Seeley, but we're counting chickens here--the book's not even finished, let alone sold. I have my fingers crossed, but I don't want to get all keyed up only to have no interest from agents or editors. :-(

Hee, Gabriele! Chess needs the Hand for work, Edsel is a guy who runs a little stall in the Market, and Terrible...Terrible is paying right now, I'd say.

I like this. Dramatic and very well written. Great prose.

Good for him. I guessed she needs the hand for work, but I wonder what sort of work she does. That's the fun with snippets - they leave all those open ends and questions.

Sometimes even to the writer. I'm still not sure what to do about Cathair from my last Friday Snippet. *grin*

Thank you, Charles! :-) Makes me feel better about the project, that's for sure.

You'll have to wait until the book is done to find out what she does, Gabriele. I'll probably submit my query to EE when it's all ready for subbing. And I know--the next scene is open, it could end one way or it could end another, and it all depends on what the characters decide they want to do.

Oooh, I hope not Camille! Fingers crossed!

Great snippet. Happy Thanksgiving, even if there will be no football. You certainly have the good wishes of your friends today.

very nice, very tight, very lovely writing, December.

I'm intrigued.... severed hands? meanies called 'Terrible'? ....magic powers....UNREAL!!

So - what do you have in mind for this book? I mean, submission wise?

I love Edsel and all the curious objects in his stall. And I am a serious story junky, I will need another fix.

Stacia said...

Thanks, Robyn. The day turned out okay, even though making Thanksgiing dinner while fighting off a cold is not much fun. :-) I hope yours was lovely too.

Thanks, Rebecca! Well...I'm hoping to snag me one of them agent people. :-) Which makes me very nervous. I like the book, but...is it really good enough? Is it sagging? I'm about to start wrapping everything up, I've got maybe another couple of weeks of work on it, so...I guess we'll find out.

Thanks Perla! Edsel's cool, isn't he? We don't see a lot of him in this one but if there are more...

Great excerpt! I don't know the context and it hooked me anyway. I have to say, I love the line:
"Too bad it was impossible to surprise someone lying in wait."

I also LOVE that opening description of Edsel "like a corpse on display" and his stillness and how that operated. It makes the world instantly weird and mystical.
