Movies

I went to see the Sex and the City movie yesterday. It was okay. I'll post a review on my lj because I can cut for spoilers there, and anything I would have to say about it would probably be too spoilery.

Except the following:

1. Was David Eigenberg (Steve) drunk through the whole film? Why was he constantly holding his head in that weird way? I kept expecting him to throw up all over himself, seriously. I guess he was supposed to be choked with emotion but he just seemed like he was fighting to be coherent.

2. Samantha's neighbor? HOT. We didn't get anywhere near as much full-frontal as has been implied, but that man is HOT. He should have been in the movie more.

3. Everybody looked old. Especially Candice Bergen; it was very sad.

4. Yes. If you grew up in St. Louis you have seen Meet Me in St. Louis. No, I'm not being sarcastic. That rang more true for me than anything else in the movie. We wtached it in elementary school. We learned all the songs.

5. SJP, I'm sorry. But you are not that pretty. I do not want or need to see you modelling outfits for what felt like ages. Over and over again. It's supposed to be a movie, not an ego massage. Yes, you have a beautiful figure, despite those gnarly bowlegs. From thighs to neck you are perfect, and I mean that sincerely. But you are not pretty and watching you try on clothes and put various expressions on those horsey facial features of yours does not give us the same kind of pleasure we get seeing, say, Beyonce doing the same thing. It's boring.

...and that's about all I can say, for general non-spoiler comments.

They've done a remake of The Women, which is an old-movie gem with Joan Crawford and Rosalind Rusell. Apparently, in keeping with modern mores, they've included a childbirth scene in the film, because while the original had lots of women being bitchy and saying clever things and that made it awesome and worth seeing, women today will not go to a film if a baby is not being born. Or so filmmakers seem to think. It's very irritating.

And last night the hubs and I watched The Breakfast Club and realized that, all these years later, we essentially still have the entire film memorized. Seriously. We recited it. Whole stretched of information from my years of education are missing, but I can repeat "I know, and I feel all empty inside because of it. I have such a deep admiration for guys who roll around on the floor with other guys," with hand gestures and facial expressions. "Over the panties...no bra...Calvins rolled up in a ball on the front seat past eleven on a school night?"

Oh yeah.

I remember all my friends trying to figure out the end of Judd Nelson's joke.

"I heard a ruckus!"

"Can you describe this ruckus, sir?"

Have you Anthony Michael Hall in The Dead Zone? How did that geeky kid get so yummy?

Oooh, we love The Dead Zone! Doesn't he look like Steve McQueen?

The joke has no ending! I spent years wondering about it but no, apparently he was just ad-libbing and knew the joke wouldn't actually end. Very frustrating. That's the sort of thing neomaxizoomdweebies waste their time doing. :-)

I'm going to take a pass on this movie. But you probably knew that already. As for SJP, yes, she does have horsey features.

Thanks for the tips on SITC. I didn't like the show, so I'll skip the movie.

Sorry to hear they added that scene in THE WOMEN. Since I have no interest in child-bearing scenes, it's another one I can skip!

Can't stand SJP, so I never could get into SatC. Every time I see her, I just want to grab her nose and...well, I probably shouldn't say any more.

Not surprisingly, I loved her performance in Mars Attacks--especially after they sewed her head onto that chihuahua...

never watched any of the tv, so no reason to see the flick, despite vancouver island's own kimberly cattrall....

Lol Charles, yeah, I figured it woukd't really be your thing.

I was really irritated about it, Devon. I love the original The Women. I don't know why they have to add that shit in there. Oh, women love babies, won't see a movie without babies, blah blah blah. Thppt.

Lol kis. See, I am a huge SATC fan. I love the show, I really do. I can't count the number of times I've seen each episode. But the last couple of years they really started to overdo the "Look how lovely and stylish SJP is" crap--which I know was an issue at least for Kim Cattrall. And I don't blame her.

And I do like KC, Laughingwolf, and she totally got screwed in the movie. All of her dialogue seemed to be "Hi ladies!" and "I'm so bored!" and that was it. No awesome Samantha one-liners.

she did 'protest too much', perhaps?

I think the writers of Family Guy had it when they said SJP looks like a foot.

I've never been a fan of the whole Chick Lit thing, even on TV, so the only times I've 'seen' SatC are when it's been on in the background because I'm writing and The Man has fallen asleep on the couch. I really doubt I'll ever see the movie.

KC from the island? I did not know. I sailed past Pamela Anderson-Lee-Rock-Anderson's house in Ladysmith once though...

She's from Nanaimo, actually, Seeley, just like Diana Krall, IIRC. And her dad, who still lives there I think, is totally ashamed of her trashy, immoral career. Bummer.

Seeley deBorn said...

Yeah, I knew Krall was... wow, someone from Nanaimo ashamed of immoral behavior. Have you seen the want ads in that town?? They're almost all for pron actresses! LOL

porn. I meant porn.

Ah, the Breakfast Club. Takes me back to 8th grade. I was in boarding school and our housemaster (the teacher who lived in the dorm with us) had several movies on VHS, but it seemed like the only ones the cool guys wanted to see were Caddyshack and The Breakfast Club. Since the cool guys always moved in packs (it's hard to be cool by yourself), they always won the which movie now votes. I've seen those movies soooo many times.

And, yeah, I prefer Ally Sheety (Sheedy?) to Molly Ringwald.

i only found out about kc being from the isle through a friend of mine here on blogger, he taught her english

he has a pic of his young self, and younger kc, on his blog, as the ultimate proof [and yes, she used to be a brunette, or at least, had dark hair]

Wasn't she in Porky's? Which, iirc, was the most financially successful Canadian movie for a long time.

The Breakfast Club was a classic. Loved it. I plan to see Sex and the City. But since it's been off the air so long, I just don't have the same excitement for it as I once did. I'll rent it. :*)
